Namecheap today published its Domain Insights & Trends report covering the first half of 2023.

40% of domains registered at Namecheap during the half were .com. .Xyz, .shop, .click, and .online rounded out the top five.

But that differs by region. In North America, the top domains were .com followed by .net and .org.

The company also disclosed renewal rates for recently registered domains (those registered between January 1, 2021 and now). .Dev had the highest renewal rate at 59%. .Com renewal rates were just 31%. While Verisign reports .com renewal rates of 73%-74%, that includes domains that have been renewed many times. I often hear that first-year .com renewal rates are around 50%, but they appear to be much lower at Namecheap, at least so far this year.

Unsurprising, .ai soared in the first half of this year. .Ai was the fourth-most registered ccTLD at Namecheap, following .co, .us, and .co.uk.

The company said that 57% of its customers who registered a domain in the first half of this year own just one domain at Namecheap. A further 29% own just two.
