The value of some quick domain research

Today I received a call out of the blue from an old client who wanted to move really quickly on a new project. Apparently let down by some other developers, he needed to take advantage of an unexpected spate of new eyeballs wanting to see his new product, which can only be described as a “bluetooth device”.
Within an hour of getting this call, I received my semi-daily newsletter from a domainer with “BluetoothDevices.org” for sale for $1350. I thought that the timing was far too bizarre to ignore, and before even considering purchasing a domain for a client project, especially when a larger investment for a dotcom is the better route, I thought I would run other options from Google Keyword traffic stats. I found that the search for the singular was greater than the plural that the domainer was offering. Turns out that “BluetoothDevice.org” was available to register. We may not use the name, and we may not have even purchased the plural, but since the stats are slightly better for the singular (in August), we thought we’d register it anyway.
The moral of the story is that one should never assume that just because a domain is for sale, that it’s alternates aren’t still available for hand registration and 10 minutes of research can save all kinds of money.
